Fiction - paperback; Sceptre; 309 pages; 2002.
An insightful look at modern-day romance, politics and the cult of celebrity, this novel is essentially the thinking person's love story. But the affair between a Westminster politician and a married English actress is at times a little corny and too contrived.
I found myself not caring about the characters and wishing both of them would just run off together because they were too boring and self-obsessed.
While I appreciate Cartwright's desire to explore the power of the media, political scandal, sexual manners and the stresses of fame, I found his continued philosophising did nothing more than obstruct the plot.
