I picked up a copy of the rather trashy London Lite, a free evening newspaper, to peruse on my journey home from work this evening (well, how else am I going to find out about the lives and loves of the Geldof girls, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, Amy Winehouse, Paris Hilton et al ?) and was mildly surprised to find a one-page feature about books instead of the usual drivel.
The feature was entitled "The ten coolest books all men should read". Unfortunately, the piece doesn't seem to be published online, so I can't link to it, but here's the list in full, a heady mix of blokey subjects -- sport, espionage, sex-and-drugs-and-rock'n'roll and boy's own adventure:
- Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
- All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
- Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klosterman
- Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind
- Moondust: In Search of the Men Who Fell to Earth by Andrew Smith
- The Dirty Dozen: The 12 Best Commando Books Ever!
- It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life by Lance Armstrong
- Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA in Afghanistan by Steve Coll
- Middlemarch by George Eliot
- Full Time: The Secret Life of Tony Cascarino by Paul Kimmage
What do you think of the list? Read anything on it?
