Ian McEwan on the Blair years

I am a firm fan of Channel 4 News, which, in this home, is commonly referred to as the "clever news". We rarely miss a bulletin.

Tonight's broadcast was no exception. Name another news bulletin that would do an extended interview with a novelist about an important issue, the impending resignation of British Prime Minister Tony Blair? Hmm, I thought not.

Jon Snow (my favourite journo -- he's a cyclist too!) spoke with Ian McEwan about the legacy of the Blair years. You can watch the broadcast here. It's definitely worth a look -- and further cements my opinion that McEwan is Britain's greatest living writer.

In Oz there's The 7.30 Report, which screens four nights a week after the news on the ABC. It's a magazine-type program that runs longer features, say four or five stories in the half hour allocated. Master of ceremonies: Kerry O'Brien. His favourite subjects, I think, are writers and other artistic types. Kerry's costume when talking to these people is not the usual business suit and tie, but a polo-neck sweater.

Dean, yes I remember the 7.30 Report and Kerry O'Brien, probably the only saving graces of Australian television journalism!

If you keep posting about Ian McEwan I might develop a crush on you.
