Courtesy of Shelly's Book Shelf, here's a meme about children's books.
Name your 3 favourite children's series.
This is where I confess I loved the tom-boy girl detective Trixie Belden. Throughout my childhood and into my early teens I used to save my pocket money and buy a new book in the series whenever I had enough money. If I remember correctly each book was 99c from my local supermarket!
Enid Blyton's Famous Five. I inherited the original red leather hardcovers from my mother, who was a great fan. I inherited a couple of Secret Seven books too, but never really liked them as much as Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog.
C.S.Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. I fell in love with these books when I was about 7 or 8 years old and remember reading the entire collection one wintry holiday by the coast with my parents. In fact, I had to wait for my dad to read them first before they were passed onto me! Unfortunately, I waited until I was 30 before I treated myself to the boxed set, but when I reread them I was severely disappointed. The magic had definitely been lost and I couldn't see beyond the racism and sexism of the text.
Name your 3 favourite non-series children's books.
The Silver Crown by Robert C. O'Brien (I think I read this book about 15 times! Absolutely LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it!)
Z is for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien
The Children of Cherry Tree Farm by Enid Blyton (another one I read over and over).
Name 3 favourite children's book characters.
