How gorgeous are the colours of the trees in this photograph? The autumnal foliage in Central Park was absolutely stunning when we strolled through it on the day of the presidential election (after we'd first taken a little stroll through Harlem). In some places the leaves were so vivid -- yellow, gold, orange and red -- that certain trees seemed to burn brighter than the sun. And as the afternoon darkness began to descend, the trees became illuminated, almost as if they were being fired by electric light. I've never seen colour like it. Beautiful.

What would a trip to Coney Island be without a visit to Nathan's, a fast-food frankfurter restaurant famous for its annual hotdog eating competition? This year the winner ate 59 hotdogs in 10 minutes. Barf.

Tell people you're going to New York and the first thing they ask is whether you're going to do much shopping. Well, given the relatively poor exchange rate and -- to be perfectly frank -- the poor quality of the clothing available, my usual answer is "no".
But on the last day in town I decided I was in need of some new trainers and not having seen any Pumas I liked, I opted for these little babies (above). And when I say little, I mean little. They're kids shoes -- a US size 5 -- but aren't they cute? Cute price too -- $29.99, which equates to roughly £20.

Two days after Barack Obama's historic win in the USA presidential elections we spied these rather contemporary-looking cupcakes in a bakery during a walk through the hip-happening Chelsea Market.
"Take a photograph," I egged on T when I spotted them sitting in the glass display case that doubled as the counter. He surreptitiously fired off a snap before the sales assistant politely told him that photographs weren't allowed -- even for non-commercial use. Little did she know it was too late.
What I love most about these cupcakes is not so much the fine artwork depicted here and the all-American colour scheme, but the widely divergent prices which told a story all of their own: the Obama cupcakes were selling for $3, the McCain ones were heavily discounted at 50 cents. No prizes for guessing who lost the election, then?

We're back from our week-long trip to Manhattan. I've had a 14-hour sleep, a feed of fish'n'chips, done a teeny bit of grocery shopping and now I'm ready to go back to bed again!

There's no doubt who the people in Harlem are going to vote for. The 'hood has gone Obama mad. There are street stalls selling Obama buttons and Obama t-shirts. There are posters in windows reminding people to vote...for Obama. And there are groups gathered in the shadow of the Adam Clayton Powell building holding giant letters that spell out Obama's name.
As we walk down 125th Street we notice people wearing Obama attire while a man in a white bib pushes through the crowds yelling "don't forget to vote!" There's such a buzz in the air it's hard to not feel a little excited.
Now, several hours later we are watching CNN coverage as election results start to come in. It looks like being an interesting night...

We have another trip to New York planned for early next month.
As luck would have it we will be there during two key events: the New York Marathon and the USA Presidential Election. This wasn't something we planned -- initially we were going to go the week before but it's mid-term school holidays here and airfares were way too expensive, so we pushed things back a week. It was only after we'd booked the tickets that it dawned on us that we'll be in town when the election comes to a climax. I'm not sure if this is something to be excited about or not...
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out places to see and things to do. This will be my fourth trip to the Big Apple, so I think I'm well over the touristy stuff now. Aside from hanging out in Bryant Park and perusing the shelves of Barnes & Noble on Union Square, I'm open to suggestions... So if anyone has any hot tips on things to see/do I'd love to hear them.
