A great pub to while away a summer's evening

We had a really lovely time in Berkhamsted on Saturday, catching up with an old friend whom we hadn't seen for more than two years. After a long relaxing lunch at The Old Mill we wandered along the canal until we came upon The Rising Sun pub. We couldn't walk past the sign declaring it to be the "Cider Pub of the Year 2010" and so in we went...

We then spent several hours in the late afternoon sunshine, sitting on the wall of the lock, sampling the wares. When most of the clientele headed indoors to watch the England vs USA World Cup match at 7.30pm, we suddenly found ourselves being handed complimentary bowls of hot salted popcorn and a plate of potatoes. Who cares about football when there's free food to be had?

A visit to Berkhamsted

This weekend was a long weekend, so I was itching to do something that would get me out of the house for at least one day. So yesterday we headed out to Berkhamsted, an historic village, north-west of London, a 30-minute train journey from Euston Station.

The town has a lot of history (see this Wikipedia entry for a full run-down and this bit on the town council's website), but we went there to take a stroll along the Grand Union Canal before visiting the Old Mill pub for a delicious lunch.

 

We shared a cheese board, a fish board, a rocket and parmesan salad and a side-order of handcut chips. It was lovely. One of us had a vintage port for dessert; the other had a citrus tart with marscapone cheese. Oh, and there might have been a pint or two of Guinness involved as well.

 

Later, we walked along the High Street, which is dotted with amazing buildings, like this architectural wonder, with its crooked walls and tiny windows.

 

Before rounding off the day with a wander around Berkhamsted Castle, which dates to the 11th century.
