We seem to be making a habit of visiting resort towns on the south-east coast this year. So far we've had two trips to Brighton, one to Clacton-on-Sea and last weekend we went to Eastbourne for the first time.
It was lovely. By far the nicest seaside town we've been to and much more upmarket than the usual fare we've come to suspect from the British coast. The sideshows, the fairground rides, the horrible fun parlours and donkey rides that characterise these places were absent.
Instead, there was a lovely pebbled beach, a Victorian pier and a fantastic boardwalk stretching miles along the shore.
Our favourite bit was the Beachhouse, a wonderful bar cafe right on the beach, just a short walk from our hotel. But we also liked the Belgian Cafe, which had amazing seafood and an extensive menu of Belgian beers.
And our hotel — The Cavendish — was fab. Our fourth-floor balcony overlooked the bandstand and we were unexpectedly treated to two free concerts — one in the afternoon, one in the evening — in which an incredibly out-of-tune brass band murdered the classics. It was hilarious, but maybe you had to be there.
