A birthday in Brighton

I celebrated my birthday in Brighton this year. And this is the stunning view that greeted us from the balcony of the hotel room that T had booked as a surprise.

It all began on Friday morning when we travelled by train from Victoria, unexpectedly ran into some friends at Brighton station and had lunch with them in our favourite pub.

Then T and I moved onto the beer garden at Hotel du Vin, where we shared a bottle of wine in the sun, before rendevouzing with our friends again in The Cask. We then headed for a (posh) curry at Indian Summer.

Back in our hotel room, we watched the (fabulous) Olympic opening ceremony on TV and listened to the crowds outside clapping and cheering as they watched it on a big screen set up on the beach. How lovely of London to put on a celebration like this for my birthday — and to T for making it so memorable!

Bridges up in lights

Beginning tonight and running until September 10, Tower Bridge is going to be specially illuminated between the hours of 9.30pm and 5am as part of the Olympic celebrations.

Six other bridges — Golden Jubilee footbridge, Waterloo Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Southwark Bridge and London Bridge — will also be lit up.

Now I just need to find an excuse to stay in town one evening after work to see this for myself!

The Great British summer

It feels like it has been raining for months. Even by British standards, it has been the worst summer ever. The only good thing about all this rain is that I get to stay indoors and do lots of reading, and the temperature of our flat isn't the equivalent of a pottery kiln. But boy, I'd like to see the sunshine soon.
